Australia expands visa biometrics rules for Indians. Since October 26

Australia expands visa biometrics rules for Indians. Since October 26
Australia will expand visa biometrics rules for Indian applicants from October 26, 2026. Find out who needs to submit fingerprints and facial pictures.
Indian travelers seeking for an Australian visa may now be required to produce fingerprints and a facial photograph under expanded biometric collection laws that went into effect on October 26, 2026. The Australian High Commission has confirmed the change, which would apply to any new visa applications submitted in India from that date.
Not all applicants will be required to provide biometrics. The Australian Department of Home Affairs will contact applicants who must complete the additional step and explain how to do so.

What has changed in Australia's visa regulations?
Previously, Australian authorities might demand visa applicants to give biometrics based on their specific application or circumstances.
However, effective October 26, Australia has expanded its biometric gathering program to cover visa applicants in India, bringing the country into a system that currently operates in roughly 60 countries.
The most significant difference is the broader reach of biometric checks, rather than requiring every Indian applicant to attend a visa center. Individuals will continue to be informed whether or not they are required to supply biometric information.Australia expands biometric collection programme to visa applicants in India
How can Indian applicants submit biometrics?
Applicants who get an official request may be routed to either of two options:
In-person Appointment: To capture fingerprints and face images, go to an Australian Biometrics Collection Center (ABCC) in India managed by VFS Global.
Australian Immi App: Eligible applicants can submit their passport information and facial photograph digitally. Those who have previously given biometric information at an ABCC and have a valid passport may be eligible for the free app option.
Do not schedule an appointment or use the app until you have the official biometric request letter. The letter outlines which approach is applicable to your instance.Australia visa rules change: Indians may need to submit fingerprints, facial images - Immigration News | The Financial Express
Impact on Indian visitors, students, and employees
The new requirements may require an additional step for Indians planning holidays, family visits, study, or work in Australia. Applicants who are asked to visit a center must pay for the appointment as well as any associated travel or service fees.
There is some flexibility. Eligible applicants may be able to perform the identification verification using the app rather than visiting a collection center. Australian authorities also state that if applicants react quickly to biometric demands, visa processing times are unlikely to be affected.
Applications submitted before October 26, 2026, are unaffected by this expansion. The revised rules apply to new applications submitted after that date.

We view this as an additional screening step, not a reason to postpone travel arrangements. Indian applicants should check official correspondence, swiftly follow biometric instructions, and avoid using unverified appointment services.
