Beginning in January 2026, Quebec will raise a minimum amount for study permits.

In 2026, Quebec will modify its study permit regulations, requiring students to provide significantly more financial documentation than previously. Living expenses must now be shown to be at least CAD 24,617 for a single candidate, and significantly more for families.

This is something you should be aware of if you intend to study in Quebec. In order to get or renew a study permit, overseas students will have to present significantly more financial evidence starting on January 1, 2026. The amount needed will rise significantly, sometimes more than tripling the present level.

New Budgetary Requirements

Both first-time applicants and students renewing their study permits are subject to the new regulation. Only living expenditures must be covered by the financial evidence. Travel expenses and tuition are kept apart.

Here is a brief comparison of the sums prior to and following January 2026:

Category: Through December 31, 2025starting on January 1, 2026
One individual under the age of eighteen CAD 7,756 CAD 24,617
One adult (18 years of age or older) CAD 15,508 CAD 24,617
CAD 22,745 CAD 34,814 for two adults
CAD 25,479 CAD 42,638 for two adults and one child
CAD 27,499 CAD 49,234 for two adults and two children

Simply put, this implies that a single student must now demonstrate that they have at least CAD 24,617 available for living expenses.
However, depending on the number of dependents, students traveling to Canada with their families must present larger sums.
